EXCERPT 3

His aloofness showed on his face. “I have a conscience, ma biche, so permit me to give you some advice.” Ignoring the basket she still held up, he rigidly leaned down toward her from within the saddle and rumbled out, “Go home. Paris does not need another penniless country girl trying to get famous. You will only end up whoring yourself out of desperation once you realize the stage pays nothing. Is that what you want? Because that is what awaits you. Acting, whoring, the pox, blaming everyone for your demise, followed by a quick death. If you are fortunate enough to die quick, that is.”

Book for DelilahHe was clearly not an optimist.

She gave him a withering look, lowering her basket. “I have much bigger plans and I can assure you, they do not include whoring myself to a man. If I wanted to do that, I could have easily stayed in Giverny. And whilst, yes, I often barter with men for whatever I need, my stage career comes first. I intend to be the next Mademoiselle Raucourt.”

“I certainly hope not. That woman is a whore. And not a very nice one at that.”

She glared. “How dare you insult the greatest actress in all of France?”

He lifted a brow. “How the hell do you think she became great?”

She gasped. “I am not about to listen to your vile gossip. I happen to like her. Ambition amongst females should be trumpeted not slapped.” Swinging away, she adjusted the heavy basket, wishing she hadn’t picked so many apples and trudged onward. “I will find my own way to Paris, merci. Whore myself, indeed. I have yet to find a man worthy of it. All you apes ever think about is food, wine and poom-poom.”

He paused from adjusting his felt hat. “What the devil are you talking about?”

Why did no one ever get it? “Sex. It sounds exactly what it looks like. Poom-poom.”

A cough escaped him. “Are you saying you have done such things?”

She rolled her eyes. “No. I have ten brothers under the age of eighteen. The eldest of them, at seventeen, is already engaged to one of the girls in the village due to his inability to control the stick between his now hairy legs. I caught Benoit with his bare arse in the air, grunting like the pig that he is. Not a pretty sight. Whilst my parents? Those two lusty little rabbits have made their bed squeak so much over the years, there are visible grooves in the wood floor that will soon take them and the entire bed to China.”

A laugh, low and deep and well-amused, escaped him. “I uh…thank you. I needed that. I have not laughed in…a long time.” He slowly trotted his horse after her and eyed her, amusement lighting his eyes. “I wish to be of assistance, my dear. Whatever you need, it is yours. How can I help?”

Oh, now he cared.

Book Quote Tuesday

11785513“If I have learned one thing in my life, it is that lamentation and regrets only make things worse. A person must move on, move forward but never forget the past, but learn from it. If you ponder the ‘if onlys’ of life, they will drive you mad.”  -Lorriane Heath, She Tempts the Duke

This is the first book I read by Lorraine Heath. I love her stories and how she writes to a readers heart strings.

Review: Bargaining with a Rake by Julie Johnstone

Readers, a friend of mine recommended I read this book and I am so happy she did. It was a great read! Books recommendations from friends are usually good finds and Bargaining with a Rake is a good find!

16164196

She has one shot to have a happy life and make sure his sister Whitney, has a happy life. Gillian must marry to make this reality. She has set her sights on an successful American businessman. This will be her ticket out of England. What she doesn’t count on is her heart telling her the American’s business partner and best friend is the man she should be with and not the American.

Alexander Trevelle, Lord Lionhurst is all things handsome and wicked. He lives a rakes life. Breaking hearts as the day is long among the Ton. Behind the rakes facade Alex is troubled, haunted and desperately faking his way through life. When his sisters sudden death throws him into overdrive, he finds he must ruin and help the woman that makes his blood boil with passion into the arms of his best friend and business partner the American, Drake Sutherland.

It’s simple really… Gillian Rutherford must marry the American Drake Sutherland and go to America, taking her sister, Whitney with her. She can do that. She’ll just need to have the American fall in love with her. She is beautiful and witting, what’s not to like? What they both didn’t see coming are the sparks that are between them. Can they both ignore the spark to accomplish their goals?

This was my first read by Julie Johnstone and I really enjoyed it. This book has quite a bit of suspense just waiting to be discovered. The villain in this book is nasty, and you can’t wait for him to get what’s coming to him. Great secondary characters as well. Auntie is funny and a strong force to be reckoned with. The chemistry between Alex and Gillian is electric and it was a joy to read it unfold. You’ll be on the edge of your seat until the very end to see what happens. Fun read.

Review: Any Duchess Will Do (Spindle Cove #4) by Tessa Dare

Readers, who challenged Tessa Dare to a book off? Because let me tell you, she put pen to paper and brought it! Oh my goodness! She rocked it in Any Duchess Will Do. I am a HUGE fan of the Spindle Cove Series and this one was stellar! This is a book you will want to read this summer. See why in my review below.

15724338

Pauline Simms is a serving girl in Spindle Cove. She is all things sassy with a keen mind. She is the daughter of a farmer and older sister to Daniela, a woman who has some challenges. Pauline has big dreams of working hard and opening a lending library in Spindle Cove, getting Daniela and herself out from underneath her bully of a father. When a grumpy duke wonders in and points to Pauline and says, “I pick her” her whole world is turned upside down and the chance of owning her lending library may be more of a reality than realized, but what will she give up to have her wildest dreams come true?

Surly, Griffin Eliot York, 8th duke of Halford has been drugged and taken to Spindle Cove to find a wife. Griff has no need or want for a wife. He wants to live his remaining days alone (he has a painful secret). However, the duchess (his mother) has other plans and wants grandchildren. She demands Griffin to pick any woman and she will train her to be the next duchess of Halford.

Griff strikes a deal with Pauline, if she goes along with plan for the duchess to put her in ‘duchess training’ and utterly fails, she will earn 1000 pounds. That is enough money to start her lending library and take care of Daniela. It’s an easy offer, essentially be yourself for a week, get some new gowns, eat fine food and at the end go home with 1000 pounds. How hard could it be? Add in a handsome duke hiding behind an emotional wall and a duchess that is hiding behind a hardshell, what could go wrong? Can both Pauline and Griff part ways after a week discovering that fate intervenes at the most inopportune of times?

One word for Any Duchess Will Do…S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R! This story is Tessa Dares best to date. I was laughing out loud within the first few pages and kept laughing throughout the story.

“A duchess might contemplate all manner of cutting remarks and frustrated oaths. But even in the face of extreme annoyance, she stifles such ejaculations.” “My,” Miss Simms said, wide-eyed. “I do hope dukes aren’t held to the same standard. Can’t be healthy for a man, always stifling his ejaculations.” -Pg 59 Any Duchess Will Do

Pauline’s fiery personality and Griff’s sarcastic point of view leaves them both perfectly match for awesome word duals. With the fire between them there is great passion and wonderful sweet tender moments. Oh and duchess is fabulous. This book is really about being true to yourself and own who you are. There will always be people out there that do not understand you or want and that’s ok, as long as you are happy with yourself, there is no reason to change for anyone. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this book, it is just that great. The Spindle Cove series is wonderful and this book just makes it irresistible. I would highly recommend this series and book.

A Week to be Wicked was previously my favorite of this series, but it now comes in at a close second to Any Duchess Will Do.

Review: Never Deny Your Heart by Maureen Driscoll (Kellington #5)

Sometimes you read a book and you just fall in love with the characters and the secondary characters. Then you realize it’s a series and you devour them all as fast as you can, but then you realize the author has not finished the series and you’re left waiting for the last book. So…you…wait…and wait… The wait is finally over! Below is my review for Maureen Driscoll’s Never Deny Your Heart (Kellington #5).

17374360

Rosalind Carson is a woman who has stood in the background blending for far too long. She is a smart woman who has a big heart and wants good things for her friends. Sadly, her family sees her as a means to an end. Her brother, a viscount doesn’t see Rosalind for the lovely, charming woman she is, but for the money she will bring into the retainers when she marries a nobleman five decades her senior.

William (Liam) Kellingtion, Duke of Lynwood is a man that walks into a room and all eyes are in him. Part of his charm is that he loves his family fiercely and will do anything to protect them.

Liam and Rosalind’s connection begins at the beginning of Kellington series. Between shy glances and secret conversations, their love blooms slowly. In each book we see just a little more of thier love unfold, as Rosalind is a close family friend to Liam’s sister Lizzie. Rosalind has loved Liam since she was a girl of 12. Liam doesn’t really acknowledge or discover his feelings until Rosalind is about to be married off to a man 50 years her senior. However, Rosalind has a different plan for her future that may or may not include Liam. Will Liam wake up and fight for what he wants or will he just let the one thing his heart truly desires go?

I was so excited when this book came out I ignored my husband to read it!  This is a series you will want to start from the beginning to understand the connection between all the characters. Liam and Rosalind story is not smooth sailing and there are a few twist that you won’t see coming, which adds to the steamy factor. I have a special place for books that involve families with a strong connection and this series has it. We see all the Kellingtons together in this book helping Liam see that being is love is worth the risks. Rosalind breaks out and decides what is best for her and her life. It was a great story and series. I know, I will read it again.

Review: Lady Vivian Defies a Duke by Samantha Grace (Beau Monde # 4)

It’s amazing what a book or a series of books can do for ones own constitution. Last week, I needed to escape from what was happening in my reality. I read the Beau Monde series by Samantha Grace. It made me giggle when I so desperately needed it. My review is for the latest book in the series Lady Vivian Defies a Duke. I really enjoyed it and look forward to more books by Samantha Grace.

15942607

Lady Vivian Worth is a vibrant adventurous young woman who has been left out in the country to stay out of trouble. Vivian seeks adventure, friendship and love.  Due to a misunderstanding she is ignored by her peers in the country. She feels ashamed and does not want to bring a dark shadow to her family; especially her brother.

Luke Forest, Duke of Foxhaven is a man with big shoes to fill. He isn’t ready to face the reality and assume the responsibilities that are his birthright. He rather seek adventure away from England. Running and seeking adventure may help keep a secret from an accident that makes certain tasks hard to accomplish. Tasks that make taking full control of his birthright difficult.

Luke does not want to marry, especially a woman that his father has arranged to marry. However, he must meet his intended to discuss and break the contract. He goes to visit Vivian while she is at her cousins house and discovers that this vibrant young women may be all the adventure he needs. Both Luke and Vivian struggle with secrets and wanting to be enough for each other. Can these two trust their own instincts and hearts to have a life full of love and adventure?

I really enjoyed this book. Luke is the guy we want our daughters (my future daughter anyway) to marry. He encourages Vivian’s bright inner star to shine and not be ashamed of it. Vivian gives Luke the courage to be the man he is always meant to be. It is a love match for the books. This happily ever after will have you laughing and as you turn the pages. Of course, every good story has a villain and Samantha Grace doesn’t stop short there either! Did I mention this was book four in a series? You’ll want to go back and read the first three as well. Luke’s brother, Lord Andrew is just one of the characters you’ll fall for.

You can find Lady Vivian Defies a Duke and other books by Samantha Grace on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
